Get the full rundown on swapping your LL (legacy) tokens to LL. Learn how the process works, what's changing, and what to expect next.
General Questions
We're updating our token architecture with the introduction of a new token. Going forward, the token previously used on the LightLink network (contract address 0xd9d7123552fA2bEdB2348bB562576D67f6E8e96E) will be referred to as LL (legacy). The new token, simply called LL, is built using LayerZero's Omnichain Fungible Token (OFT) standard.
This upgrade enables decentralized governance through the Aragon DAO framework, significantly reduces cross-chain transfer times between Ethereum mainnet and LightLink, and introduces a more advanced token standard. The new LL token is designed for better DeFi integrations, scalable DAO infrastructure, and seamless multichain access. It lays the foundation for a more interoperable and future-ready ecosystem.
This migration powers three major upgrades:
- Community governance through Aragon DAO
- Cross-chain transfers in minutes instead of 24 hours
- Implementation of modern token standards that support advanced DeFi and governance features.
The new LL token has launched, and migration from LL (legacy) is now open. You can migrate at any time as there is no set deadline. Your tokens remain safe, and migration will be supported for the foreseeable future.
No changes at all. Total supply and tokenomics remain exactly the same. This is purely a technical upgrade.
Token Swap
Only LL (legacy) tokens on the LightLink network need to be swapped. If you hold LL tokens on Ethereum mainnet, no action is required as those remain the canonical LL token for all chains. If you wish, you can bridge your tokens from Ethereum mainnet to the LightLink network to receive the new LL token.
LL (legacy) tokens will remain safe and usable in the short term. However, support will gradually be phased out as the ecosystem adopts LL. To avoid disruption, we recommend swapping within the first few months.
The bridge interface does not support reversing the swap from LL to LL (legacy). However, since both tokens will exist on-chain, it may be technically possible to perform such a swap through DeFi platforms. Please note that this is not officially supported, and users who attempt it do so at their own risk.
Yes. You can choose to swap any amount of your LL (legacy) tokens and you don't need to swap the full balance at once.
No. The bridge interface is designed to be fully compatible with all wallet types, including institutional accounts and multisig wallets.
You can find the official LL token contract addresses below and on the LightLink Token page:
- Ethereum Mainnet: 0x0921799CB1d702148131024d18fCdE022129Dc73
- LightLink Mainnet (LL (legacy)): 0xd9d7123552fA2bEdB2348bB562576D67f6E8e96E
- LightLink Mainnet (LL): 0x519d3443cacc61bd844546edaea48e5502021802
- Base Mainnet: 0x519d3443cacc61bd844546edaea48e5502021802
Always verify contract addresses using official LightLink sources before interacting with them.
Vesting and Locked Tokens
Tokens in vesting contracts will remain in LL (legacy) format until they unlock. Once they're available, you can swap them for LL via the bridge. Your vesting schedule will not change.
No. Vesting contracts will continue releasing LL (legacy) tokens, which you'll need to swap manually after they unlock.
There's no set deadline. We recognize that vesting schedules can span several years, and we're committed to keeping the swap interface available for the full duration of all vesting periods.
Technical Questions
LayerZero is a leading cross-chain messaging protocol that enables secure, trustless communication between blockchains. Its OFT (Omnichain Fungible Token) standard allows tokens to move seamlessly across chains in just minutes, rather than hours or days, while preserving top-tier security and reliability.
Transfers between Ethereum and LightLink with LL (legacy) currently take ~24 hours due to security constraints. With LL, transfers complete in just 3–5 minutes, a 100x improvement in speed and user experience.
Aragon is the gold standard for decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). Their Toucan voting plugin enables token holders to participate in governance from any supported chain, with votes aggregated and relayed efficiently to minimize costs while maintaining complete decentralization.
Most modern wallets will automatically detect the new LL tokens. However, in some cases, you may need to manually add the LL token contract address. We’ll share detailed instructions and the official contract addresses prior to migration. To learn more click here.
You can track the number of LL (legacy) tokens swapped by using a block explorer. The contract and transaction data will be publicly available on-chain, allowing anyone to verify the amount swapped in real time.
Security and Safety
Only access the bridge through links shared on our official communication channels. We will never DM you with a swap link. The correct URL will be prominently displayed on our website, social media, and governance forum. Always verify the URL and look for a secure connection (https://) in your browser.
The bridge interface is designed to minimize user error, but it's still important to double-check all addresses. If you accidentally send LL (legacy) tokens to the LL contract (or vice versa), contact our support team immediately for assistance.
As with any blockchain transaction, the main risks include phishing attacks, fake websites, and user error. Stay vigilant:
- Always confirm you're on the official site
- Never share your private keys
- Double-check all transaction details before confirming
Governance and DAO
LL tokens come with full governance capabilities. You can vote on proposals, create new proposals (if you meet the minimum threshold), and delegate your voting power to other addresses.
No! Thanks to Toucan voting, you can vote from LightLink or any supported chain. Votes are aggregated and relayed to mainnet automatically.
The DAO will govern key areas such as: protocol upgrades, treasury allocations, grant distributions, partnership approvals, and other ecosystem-wide proposals. Initial governance settings will be conservative but can evolve through future proposals.
Once the DAO goes live, you'll be able to delegate your voting power through the governance interface. Delegation does not transfer your tokens; it only assigns your voting rights and can be changed at any time. We'll publish a full step-by-step guide ahead of the DAO launch.
DeFi and Integration Questions
Protocols must update their contracts to support the new LL tokens. We're working closely with key DeFi platforms on LightLink to ensure a seamless upgrade. From the user side, most of these transitions will happen automatically.
If you're a liquidity provider, monitor announcements from the protocols you use. In most cases, you'll need to:
- Remove liquidity
- Swap LL (legacy) to LL
- Re-add liquidity with LL
Yes. Deposits to centralized exchanges are only supported from Ethereum mainnet, and this remains unchanged. Most exchanges will handle the migration on your behalf if needed, but please check with your exchange for their specific process and timeline.
If your LL (legacy) tokens are held in a custodial wallet or on an exchange, you'll need to contact the service provider or wallet custodians directly. Only they can assist with withdrawing the tokens to a self-custodial wallet.
You can only deposit LL from the Ethereum Mainnet. Deposits from LightLink or Base will not be credited.
Support and Troubleshooting
If you need assistance with the token migration, your first stop should be the official LightLink Discord. Our support team will be available there to answer questions and guide you through the process. We'll also provide detailed documentation, and video tutorials for additional help.
Don't panic. First, check your transaction hash on a block explorer. If it looks stuck or failed, document the transaction hash and contact our support team. The bridge is designed to be fail-safe; if something goes wrong, your tokens remain in your wallet.
Not at all! The interface is designed to be intuitive and user-friendly; similar to using a typical DeFi platform. If you can send tokens and approve transactions, you'll be able to complete the swap easily. We'll also provide step-by-step video guides for extra support.
Yes. The migration documentation and user guides will initially be available in English. Translations into other languages will follow based on community demand to ensure global accessibility.
Future Considerations
LL (legacy) will gradually be phased out. While it will remain functional in the short term, support from DApps, exchanges, and protocols will be phased out. We recommend migrating to LL as soon as possible to maintain compatibility and access to new features.
There are no direct token incentives planned. However, early migrators will gain:
- Participation in initial DAO proposals
- Faster bridging capabilities
- Immediate access to updated DeFi protocols
